Painted black, but losing some paint and exposing the leather underneath.Center front panels each have a very tiny hole about an Inch up from bottom, near center of panel. Each has a tiny hole about half way up by the double incised lines. There evidently was some identification piece attached on the front. Front small Metal Tag says: CAIRNS & BRO. NewYork. Hat has black paint over a rich brown colored leather. Strong photo light on left side of one photo brings out of color while other side was in dark shadow at night. A watcher wrote that his grandfather was measured for a similar hat when he worked with the fire department in 1923.He just wrote again: In the one photo of the top front of the helmet, you’ll notice two small diamond shaped embossed designs near the very top of the helmet. These are called “makers marks”. Back then, Cairns and Bros. had a handful of leather craftsmen who made these individually by hand. These craftsmen would put their personal stamp on every helmet they made. To have a helmet with these marks is fantastic! Not many of these have survived this long. Price it at $1200. Hello, just wanted to give you a “heads up”. This helmet is from the FDNY. My grandfather was in that department from 1913-1941. His 2nd helmet is EXACTLY like this one, which was issued to him in 1923. The reason I know is that in that particular year, the department actually measured your head and formed the leather and felt liner to form an exact fit. That being said, I think you should #1, revise the date of the helmet from late 1800s, and #2, DON’T change the price!
