It was authorized on January 2, 1937 and was signed by James E. Coyne and Graham F. Towers. These 1937 notes were the first to be bilingual in both English and French. When King Edward VIII abdicated in December of 1936 the Canadian Bank Note Company used the same vignette of the new, unexpected, King George VI, that had appeared as "Prince Albert, Duke of York" on the $50.00 notes of the 1935 series.
