Description: Type: Type I Year of Image: 1986 Year of Issue: 1986 Issuer: Unidentified Size: 8 x 10 Notes: In between JFK's assassination and the 9/11 attacks, there was another national tragedy that everyone remembers where they were when it happened: The Challenger Disaster. If you're of a certain age, you may have even watched it live in a school classroom, where you sat stricken and horrified as Challenger exploded just 73 seconds after liftoff, killing everyone on board. Including the beloved New Hampshire teacher Christa McAuliffe, who'd been chosen from over 11,000 applicants for NASA's Teacher in Space Project. Following Challenger, the Space Shuttle program was grounded for nearly 3 years. This is the first certified Type I photo from the STS-51-L mission that we've ever handled, let alone seen offered on the auction block. It retains the original paper caption that hauntingly mentions the onset of malfunctioning about 15 seconds before the shuttle's break-up and disintegration: "KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. - This 70 mm still photograph of the 51-L launch was taken from Camera Pad 10 north of Launch Complex 39-B approximately 58.32 seconds after launch. The photograph shows an unusual plume in the lower part of the right hand solid rocket booster." This is an original, unmodified photo of the 1986 Challenger STS-51-L space shuttle disaster. The photo captures a Type 1 photo of the shuttle, with a focus on the astronauts and space travel theme. It is a collectible item for historical memorabilia enthusiasts and those interested in space exploration missions. The photo is PSA/DNA certified, ensuring its authenticity and quality.
