Description: A Classic Lawalwa Mask Ex Joseph Gerena , New York. A carved wooden ceremonial dance mask with highly stylized, almost cubistic like facial features, incised linear designs, kaolin clay pigments and a well worn surface, suggesting field use. Through offerings and prayers at dedicated shrines, dances and entertainments, Lwalwa religion seeks to maintain balance and order between the living, the ancestors and spirits. A sculptor , typically a male, is highly prized and well-paid for his work, he may even become a village leader. Lwalwa art consists almost entirely of masks, which appear at boy's initiations, funerals and festivals held after hunts. The mask measures 11 x 8.5 inches, a metal display stand can also be included.
