Description: A letter from Arthur Conan Doyle to Alfred Carpenter R.N. (HMS Challenger) inviting him and his son, also Alfred (who later became Vice-Admiral Alfred Francis Blakeney Carpenter, a recipient of the Victoria Cross), for a visit (and a game of cricket, presumably). The letter was found in a scrapbook that Alfred Francis Blakeney kept and you can see that he has pencilled in his recollection of the approximate date. The letter has been stuck with glue to a backing page. It reads: Dear old chap Come along and bring the boy. If he is a Chip off the old block he will be worth knowing. In a large room with a big bed you would not mind putting up together, would you? I shall have 7 or 8 visitors in the house. Yours A.C.D. Better come down Monday morning, leave your knaps (knapsacks / backpacks) at the station & go straight to the Haslemere field. I can play you both that day. _gsrx_vers_1664 (GS 9.8a5 (1664))
