Description: ANA MENDIETA. Painter. Sculptor. Conceptual Art. Contemporary Art. Cuba (1948-1985) • Title: Untitled • Technique: watercolor / cardboard • Size: 17 x 12 inches • Executed: 1984 • Signed: Ana Mendieta PROVENANCEJosé Veigas, Private collection, Havana, acquired from original owner by current owner. Ana Mendieta was a conceptual artist, painter, sculptor, and worked with photography, video, and was particularly recognized for her performance art. Mendieta attended the University of Iowa, where she studied Fine Arts and earned a Master's degree in painting. However, she recognized that two-dimensional art did not work for her artistic interests and motivations. Her language was directed at questioning issues of women's oppression as a gender, violence, stereotypes, as well as nature and beauty. Her aesthetic resources extended to the use of her body, blood as a magical bond, and natural environments. In some cases, her creations are defined as "earth-body art." Mendieta exemplified the best of her art in a collection called "Siluetas," focused on sculpted figures made with natural elements such as grass, flowers, branches, and clay, and incorporated themes such as creation, faith, and femininity. This particular work has the charm of reflecting almost in mimesis the components, leaves, of nature that so motivated the artist as part of her creative trajectory. This piece could very well be part of the creative projects conceived for the first time in his native island, Cuba, as described in the testimony attached to the images of the work. ANA MENDIETA . Pintora. Escultora. Arte Conceptual.
