It is not that the map maker was unaware of the shape of the eastern part of the island: rather it shows that that part was considered the area of the wild "uncooked" savages.The longitude makes Beijing the Prime Meridian. Featuring a rococo chinoiserie ornamentation.Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d' Anville (1697-1782) was a French cartographer and compiled over 200 maps. This map is from his most important work Nouvel Atlas de la Chine, published in Paris in 1735.
