AYNSLEY c.1934 English Bone China Teacup & Saucer Red Poppies & Flowers on Black

Description: This is a really pretty fine bone china teacup and saucer made by Aynsley of England. The cup and saucer have smooth edges trimmed in shiny gold and are decorated with red poppies, blue cornflowers and pink and yellow flowers and their greenery that really pop against the black background. Looking closely at the flowers, it looks as if some were applied by transfer, and some, the red poppies in particular, were handpainted because I can see brush strokes and places where the paint pooled a bit, like the edges of the petals! The cup is about 3 & 1/4 inches in diameter, stands 2 & 3/4 inches tall, and holds about 2/3 cup. The saucer is 5 & 3/8 inches in diameter. The green backstamp of the crown, a banner with AYNSLEY inside it, and the words ENGLAND and BONE CHINA under the banner, was used starting in 1934 into the 1950’s according to antiquers.com. So this set, 70-90 years old, is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. When I looked with a super bright light I could see very fine crazing under the glaze, but the glaze is smooth to the touch. There are two small areas on the inside top edge of the cup, one, a small line that looks either like gold from the trim or a bit of paint from the cup, and second a dot or two in the glaze right near the gold trim on the edge on the inside of the cup that can be seen in the picture #20 There is a bit of rub wear to the gold on the edges. There also a smudge on the white center of the saucer, where the cup rests, that I suspect is from a paint covered fingerprint of the artist decorating and painting the cup. Note the black on the underside unglazed rim of the bottom of the cup. At first I thought it was dirt from scuffing, but it looks more like the cup was set down in some black paint when it was being decorated! There is a very small roughness or chip in the glaze on the underside edge of the saucer, very hard to see, but I took a picture and just added it, see the last picture. And note to the left of the arrow, is a bit more of the black paint on the edge of the saucer. This is one of those unusual and stunning cups and saucers, that would be so pretty to display in between enjoying a cup of tea or coffee in it! By May of 1997, Aynsley China was acquired by The Belleek Pottery Group in Ireland. The company closed its Stoke-on-Trent factory in September 2014, but Aynsley items are still made by a number of companies around the world.
