Description: Type of Art: Oil on canvas Condition: Good - shows some sign of wear including weathering to the paper backing of the frame. Dimensions: 36x30 Frame: Made of Wood, condition is Excellent - shows no sign of wear Artist: Artist's name is Gongkam Signed by Artist? No This listing is for a truly one-of-a kind piece. Measuring approximately 36x30 with frame, this piece was painted by Gongkam the elephant of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Gongkam, along with fellow elephant Wanpen, were taught to paint by Chinese artist Chaowalit in the mid-1990s. Gongkam was originally from the Maesa Elephant Camp, which unfortunately has a rather checkered history. Since 2019, the park has been under new ownership and the website claims to be allowing the elephants more space and independence, even going as far as to eliminate shows, elephant rides, and tricks including painting. Further standards and changes are unknown. This particular piece comes with a sheet of paper detailing Gongkam's journey into artistry written by the Asian Elephant Art & Conservation Project, which no longer exists. Given the dates of Gongkam's other pieces appraised by the AEACP, this painting is likely from sometime in 1998. The overall piece is in great condition, as is the wooden frame it comes in. The only signs of wear include some discoloration and weather to the paper backing of the frame.
