The doctor begins his work in 1862 after the Battle of Shiloh was over. He is assigned to a Hospital Riverboat on the Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. By the end of August 1862 his contract expired. The doctor went back to New York City and began to work at Bellevue Hospital. He keeps his diary. There are entries concerning the Draft Riots shortly after Gettysburg. He witnessed the riots from his window and treated many of the wounded. The book continues sporadically for the rest of the war.
