Historical Facts: Antoninus Pius (/ntnans pas/; Latin: Titus AeliusHadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pius; 19 September 86 7 March 161 AD), alsoknown as Antoninus, was Roman emperor from 138 to 161. He was one of the FiveGood Emperors in the NervaAntonine dynasty and the Aurelii. Born into a senatorial family, Antoninus held variousoffices during the reign of emperor Hadrian, acquiring favor which saw himadopted as Hadrian's son and successor shortly before Hadrian's death. Heacquired the name Pius after his accession to the throne, either because hecompelled the Senate to deify his adoptive father Hadrian, or because he hadsaved senators sentenced to death by Hadrian in his later years. His reign is notable for the peaceful state of the Empire, with no major revolts or military incursions during this time, and for hisgoverning without ever leaving Italy. A successful military campaign insouthern Scotland early in his reign resulted in the construction of theAntonine Wall. Antoninus was an effective administrator, leaving his successorsa large surplus in the treasury, expanding free access to drinking waterthroughout the Empire, encouraging legal conformity, and facilitating the enfranchisementof freed slaves. He died of illness in 161 and was succeeded by his adoptedsons Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus as co-emperors. A fourre is a coin, that is made from a base metal core that has been plated with a precious metal to look like its solid metal counterpart; the term is derived from the French for "stuffed." The term is normally applied to ancient silver-plated coins such as the Roman denarius and Greek drachma, but the term is also applied to other plated coins.
