Misha[1] Alexandrovich (23 July 1914, Berzpils, Vitebsk Governorate - 3 July 2002, Munich) was a Latvian Jewish tenor, and cantor, internationally acclaimed as a fine performer of classical and popular repertoire in several languages.[2][3]He performed for nearly 75 years, since his first concert as a 9-year old in Riga, until the last one, in Moscow, May 26, 1997.[4]BiographyMikhail Alexandrovich was born on the 23 of July 1914,in the village of Berzpils, Vitebsk Governorate (now part of Balvi Municipality, Latvia), in the family of Jewish peasants.[4]From 1920-1926, aged six to twelve, he gained popularity as a child prodigy. He studied at and graduated from the Riga Conservatory. In 1930s for a long time he was a hazzan (cantor) at synagogues in Riga, Manchester (1934-1937) and Kaunas (1937-1940).[4]Since the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940 onwards he was a concert and chamber music singer in the USSR. For his concert performances he was awarded the honorary title of Meritorious Artist of the RSFSR (1947) and the Stalin Prize (1948). However, since 1961 an official restriction was placed on his solo concerts.[4]He emigrated to live in Israel from 1971 to 1974, then to the United States from 1975 to 1990, and from 1990 until his death he lived in Germany. Alexandrovich, Mikhail, tenor, * 1917 Riga, he belonged to an orthodox Jewish family. As a child of six years, he caused a stir when he songs by Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Glinka and lectured in his native Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany in concerts, as well as Jewish religious vocal music. He then studied at the Conservatory in Riga, singing, piano and violin and won a singing competition in Manchester. Around 1937 he began a career as an opera singer at the opera houses of Riga and Kaunas (Kovno). He sang in Kaunas inter alia Count Almaviva in "Barber of Seville", the Lindoro in Rossini's "Italiana in Algeri," the Nemorino in "Elisir d'Amore" and the Prince in "Rusalka" by Dvorak. Since 1940, he had a successful career as a radio singer at Radio Riga, but had to flee when the occupation of the Baltic States by German troops in 1941 as a Jew in the interior of the Soviet Union. It was during the Second World War concerts of Russian soldiers and occurred even in the besieged Leningrad. For this he was awarded by the Soviet government with several medals. After the war he settled in Moscow, however, sought to emigrate to Israel, which was refused. After many years of waiting and through the mediation of figures such as the Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and the UN Secretary General U Thant, the artist was allowed to emigrate to Israel in 1972 finally. He settled there in the Kibbutz Ramat Gan near Tel Aviv-down and took photographs of Jewish folk music and religious chants on the RCA Records brand out. In 1974 he undertook a concert tour of the United States and eventually became cantor for a number of years at the Beth David Synagogue in Toronto. In addition to the RCA plates already mentioned numerous recordings of the Soviet state board production (Melodiya) have emerged in the USSR, presenting a nice educated, lyric tenor voice that recalls the great tenors of the Russian school.
