Description: Vintage Double Bit Axe Head. It is marked "TRUE TEMPER" on one side. "KELLY AXE & TOOL WORKS, CHARLESTON, W. VA., U.S.A., "4" on the other side; difficult to read. It measures 9" long with 4 1/2" bits. It weighs approximately 3 lb. 13 ounces. Some slight pitting. It has not abused nor extensively filed down; pretty near its original profile. It will make a nice addition to your axe collection! This axe head was made in a bygone era when bit welding made the strongest axe heads. Axes were made in two halves, half of the eye was hammered open on each side, then the two halves were welded together with heat and pressure. A steel bit was sandwiched between the two pieces of iron to form the cutting edge and was welded in place. It was made to take beating and the bits are wicked sharp!
