Mexican Revolution Border War Villa Ojinaga refugees U.S. 15th cavalry RPPC 1914

Description: Mexican Revolution Border War Real Photo Postcard The Battle of Ojinaga, was fought on January 11, 1914, between Pancho Villa’s Revolutionaries and Government Troops under Pascual Orozco. The Ojinaga conflict put an end to the last stronghold of the Federal Army in Northern Mexico. Pancho Villa arrived in Ojinaga with a large army, displacing the Federal forces from the city, and pursued the Federalists across to the American border. Many of the Federal fugitives were arrested in the United States, accused of violating the Neutrality Act. 3352 Federal soldiers (including 8 generals) and 1607 women, were transported from Presidio to Marfa and then to Fort Bliss. More than 2,000 rifles, two cannons, several machine guns and thousands of rounds of rifle ammunition were taken from the fleeing Federal soldiers by Major McNamee's men and were piled up in Presidio. Photo depicts U.S. 15th Cavalry, Major McNamee, U.S. patrol commander at Presidio, TX, with less than 500 cavalrymen directing the 5000 Ojinaga internees from Presidio to Marfa, TX. "It was the first time the American Army was called upon to shelter, feed and clothe an entire division of a foreign army which included eight disarmed generals. The picturesque march afoot through American territory of so many foreign soldiers and women with their baggage abounded with Incident: the birth of a child, the death of several wounded soldiers, the search for water in the desert, the constant straggling away from the line of march, and the rounding up again of scores of the refugees were some of the difficulties with which the United States Cavalry, had to contend. Viewed from a hilltop the incoming army as it zig-zagged through the mountain passages and reached backward into the dusty distance ten miles away was a picture of exhaustion." Major M. M.
