Description: Old Master Woodcut of Christ at Emmaus by Johann Mommard, after Albrecht DurerWoodcut print by Johann Mommard, after Albrecht DurerFlemish; ca. 1587Printed on laid paper, attached to a support sheet and mounted in a modern frame. Approximate size: 13.25 x 11.25 (frame); 3.125 x 5 in. (print) A deceptive copy by Johann Mommard, of Albrecht Dürer’s ‘Christ at Emmaus’ from his ‘Small Passion’ woodcut series. Mommard’s copy is arduously faithful in its accuracy with each line carefully rendered and distinguished only by its subtly coarser demeanor of execution. The fidelity of Mommard’s copy is testimony to his remarkable attention to detail and talent as a block cutter. Dürer’s original woodcut print of ‘Christ at Emmaus’ was part of a bound literary work published in 1511. Two prints in the original series are dated, 1509 and 1510, respectively, and indicate their completion only a few years after Dürer’s second return from Italy. A very rich impression, handsomely matted and set in a modern frame. Condition: Generously trimmed outside the border. Minor yellowing of paper, commensurate with age.
