Vintage 1968 Benrus Ultra-Deep Super-Compressor Diver w/Warm Patina,Tropic Strap

Description: This seldom seen vintage 1968 Benrus Ultra-Deep Super-Compressor came from the estate of its original owner who proudly wore it as his daily wearer for nearly 45 years. The black matte dial is in near pristine condition and the original tritium, which remains fully intact and no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully to a perfectly matching golden buttermilk hue. In my humble opinion the dial and patina could not be more pleasing. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with no signs of oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped "STAINLESS STEEL" and "BENRUS" while the inside of the case back is stamped "SWISS MADE" followed by "SUPER-COMPRESSOR,""BREVET + 317537,""BREVET + 337462,""8-68,""BENRUS WATCH Co INC,""SWISS" and "6089." The crystal should be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss "BENRUS WATCH Co INC" stamped ETA 2472 automatic movement with quickset date function is clean, keeps accurate time and the date wheel rolls over automatically at approximately 12 am. The quickset date works flawlessly by moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 20.5 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. The top cross-hatched crown controls the inner bezel, which moves bidirectionally without issue. The bottom cross-hatched crown is used to set the date and time and to wind the movement. After recently winding this crown 39 full revolutions the movement had a power reserve of approximately 7 hours. On the wrist the movement will continue to run but off the wrist and relying only on the power reserve it will stop running around the 7 hour mark, signaling that a service is needed. Given that this watch is nearly 55 years old with an unknown service history (there are three visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back) a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended. This watch measures approximately 37 mm without the crown, approximately 40 mm including the crown and approximately 18 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the mid-case, is approximately 9 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 11 mm. This watch comes on a period correct genuine and original near NOS 18 mm curved lug ends Tropic strap with signature "INOX" flared buckle. The straight edge long end measures approximately 121 mm with the short end measuring approximately 85 mm, excluding the buckle.Although the movement keeps accurate time given its short power reserve and unknown service history a complete overhaul is recommended.
