When other companies were going broke during the Great Depression years of the 1930s, the Coffing Hoist Company he created thrived in Danville. Utility companies used his hoist for line work and equipment manufacturer John Deere gave it a stamp of approval for farm use. By the 1940s, a Coffing hoist could be found on nearly every farm. The hoist also was used by circus performers. Among them was Hubert Castle, one of the leading high wire professionals in the 1930s and 1940s. He performed with a number of circus companies, including Cole Brothers and Ringling Brothers. Both shows came to Danville during the period Castle was performing.Hubert Castle did several stunts on the high wire and was featured on the July 28, 1941, cover of Life magazine with his family. He stressed the importance of keeping the proper tension on the wire he walked and pointed out Coffing Hoist of Danville provided “by far the safest” and most reliable equipment for that purpose.Fred R. Coffing was credited with more than three dozen inventions during his life, and his company was a mainstay in Danville for decades. In 1955 it was sold to Duff-Norton of Pittsburgh, Pa. , and the Danville facility was eventually closed. But Coffing hoists still remain a popular item and are manufactured today by Columbus McKinnon, an international leader in the field of material handling. The name Coffing is associated with hoists world wide and it all began in a barn workshop in Vermilion County nearly 100 years ago, when Fred R. Coffing began experimenting with a car jack and a chain.
